Children's Day in China - June 1

I don't know if that is why GOOGLE had this home page or not, but maybe...what do you think?

Given the relationship between google and China, it doesn't seem likely.

Additionally, the toys don't seem Chinesey, but then, why are toys on Google's home page today? It's a mystery to me.

Farewell to Hong Kong

We went on our final trip to Hong Kong...

We saw the world's largest bronze Buddha statue;

We climbed a gazillion steps up, then a gazillion steps down; it was worth it

Then we ate at a vegetarian restaurant run by the monks; good food...yum, yum

We also visited a fantastic museum: The Hong Kong Museum of History...where we learned the fascinating history of the great city of Hong Kong ...what an incredible story of that place.

And, then it was farewell to my favorite city in the Orient.

Hollywood - You Stink!

"Mrs. Hackworth, are all Americans like they are on reality shows?"

"Mrs. Hackworth, are all American girls as mean as they are on Gossip Girl?"

"Mrs. Hackworth, is everyone in America rich?"

"Oh my G...," they say over and over, not even knowing what it means, but they have heard it so often on television programs.

"Mrs. Hackworth, why do all American college girls look so much older than we do?"

"Mrs. Hackworth, do all the boys and girls in America have boyfriends and girlfriends? Do the girls and boys really live together in the same dorms? Do girls REALLY ask boys on dates?"

I'll say it again:

Hollywood, YOU STINK!

My Son - the Photographer

He knows how to use the light to its advantage...

He understands apertures, settings on the camera, and how to use all the do-dads on a camera...
He's so good at putting people at ease and making them feel comfortable....

And the end result is that his pictures are unique, beautiful, awe-inspiring, memorable, and the pictures capture the moment.

Pictures by Justin Hackworth Photography
So, now I need this son here in China to take a picture that would show off my new facial features!

Outside My Window

Green, lush plants...

unusual and unique birds...

through the overgrowth of trees, bushes, plants, is a walking trail that occasionally has people walking on it and I hear their happy chatter....

when it rains, the green sparkles and everything looks so fresh....

there are amazing and unusual night sounds of frogs unlike anything I have ever heard in my life....

and it's all right outside the office window....what a beautiful world!

The Fall of Loni

CAUTION: graphic photo ahead.

Routine Friday night...

dinner with a couple of students....

walking home on a perfect evening...

stopping to watch a game of neighborhood men playing basketball....

turning to walk away....

stumbling on chunk of cement.....

crashing to the sidewalk - head on....

BIG goose-egg, swollen eyeball, sore knee

not such a routine Friday after all!

OUCH!
And, all is well; I'm totally FINE, except my ego - for once again- proving I'm not safe to walk around.

NOTE: Allen returned to the scene of the crime wanting to take a picture of the chunk of cement sticking up from the walk, and it had been repaired! The protruding cement chunk was gone...how can I sue now?

From my INBOX

too bad I don't read Chinese...
I have no clue
who this is from
what it says

Graduation - Chinese Style

It's all so similar:

proud parents

Happy friends

Excitement in the air

Lots of picture taking and lots of flowers

The only difference I could see was that underneath the black robes, each student wore a white blouse/shirt, black pants/skirt, and a red tie.

But, the joy and excitement are all the same!

Walking Home from Class Each Wednesday Morning

The entire primary/middle school is outside doing exercises. The voice on the loudspeaker says; yi, er, san ( counting in Chinese.)

The sight is always a joy to me.

Random Ramblings - Again

1. Their skirts are very short; their shorts are very short, but for some reason, it's not at all like in America; they are not trying in any way to be sexy. It's very hot, so they wear short clothes. And, they are not skin tight. The tops they wear are very modest...no bosoms showing like in America. I find it innocently beautiful. They are so childlike; in fact, they refer to each other as boys and girls and when they talk about exercising, they say they are going to the playground. What college student in America says that?

2. I so WISH I could like the food. Allen is getting a little impatient about the food and me. Last night we ate at a canteen that he really likes. I picked out a pile of something that looked edible which was a pork dish. The pork was all fat (I often wonder, who gets the REAL meat? Not ever me, that's for sure.) It was burning hot, spicey. My mouth is still suffering. But, it's all so unappealing looking and smelling. I know it is my problem - I need to not be so picky. But, I have cut way back on potato chips - haven't eaten some for over a month! So, that is something, at least.

3. I want so badly to help these students improve their English! Last week, Stefani became very emotional as she described her worry about taking the oral English exam which would determine if she can study abroad. We are meeting before class each week to just talk and give her an opportunity to express herself. The competition in China is FIERCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many students, so few spaces to go abroad. Heartbreaking. Oh, America, what a land of opportunity your provide for your citizens. Just to travel is a privilege not many have here in China.

4. Destina was so excited to share the delicious treats from her hometown of Beijing with me. She patiently explained each one and what it is made of. Oh, I definitely will NOT tell her that they gag me? I am saving some to take to America to share with my enemies. HA!

5. It is so humid that popcorn goes soggy after about one hour.

That's it for now.

YIKES! - Scary!

Just got my hair highlighted...

I'm trying to grow my bangs out.

This morning, I realized my sweep of hair looks
just like Donald Trump's hair!

Can you tell which is which?

How kind and clean-fingered he is!"
Irvan

Oh, this expression totally made me smile. I just love the way these kids express themselves. They try so hard; they are amazing, really.

Eight more weeks.....I will miss them...

Miss Qeeto and Moi

She waits patiently for her dinner each evening.

I arrive at the appointed time and place...she is ready for me.

I wrap the sheet tightly around my body. Allen lies next to me with his arms and legs exposed.

But, Miss Qeeto is not interested in feasting on him....she wants only moi.

After I fall into a deep sleep, Miss Qeeto makes her move.

She sings her song right into my left ear...she seems to prefer my left side.

Last night she began the meal by taking a nibble on my 4th left toe right by the toenail - a difficult place to scratch.

I wrapped up tighter.

She wanted more...the main course was my left eyelid. I covered my face.

Miss Qeeto was not done yet. She hadn't had dessert...a small place sticking out of the sheet on my left arm.

Full at last, she rested till the dance ritual will begin again tonight.

Miss Qeeto - always ready for Moi!

Goal Setting..

The Goal...

to eat at Taco Time.

Goal Achieved - Twice in one short week!

There is just no feeling quite like setting a goal and accomplishing it.

A Family Affair

Surprises Galore on Jenni's Graduation Day

She didn't know her sister was flying in from Virginia - total surprise!

Her parents didn't know SHE was speaking at graduation - total total surprise!
Then, Jordan found out he passed his national boards to be a board-certified anesthesiologist, which really shouldn't have been a surprise at all. But, only 60% pass it on the first go-round, so good job, DOC Hackworth....

So, now there are 2 DOC Hackworths, 1 DOC Rose, and 1 DOC Fisher.... and one PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER to take all the pictures (that's why he's not in this one) - you inspire us all, dear ones!

It's the little things....

That remind me of why I love America..

Being able to drink water or brush my teeth right from the bathroom tap.

Having clean public restrooms that have soap, warm water, toilet paper, and don't stink.

Being in a city that is clean, where people don't use the sidewalk as their personal spittoon or toilet.

Not worrying about talking about my personal religious and political beliefs.

Being able to communicate simple things like, where can I find the hair spray?

I will be forever grateful that Allen and I were able to go to China, just as I will be forever grateful to have been born in America! We have two months left of our adventure....I must make every day count!

God Bless America!

God bless us all.

Slip of the tongue

4:30 a.m. Los Angeles airport...

Fox news television interview...

The question.... How did you hear the news?

The answer....we had just gotten off a long plane ride from a foreign country. We were watching the news and heard the news that Obama had been killed. We were so excited to hear the good news.

Tv anchor to cameraman...We won't be able to use that!

And that is why you didn't see our interview on the morning news in Los Angeles!

Note: no disrespect or malicious was intended...it really was a slip of the tongue because of the similarity in tier names.

Recipe for Happiness

Take one important event.

Mix in family and friends.

Stir in music, laughter, food, pictures, stories, reminisces, and love.

Outcome..memories to last a lifetime!

What's That Again?

"I met a guy from America...he has been to China for 6 months. Actually he loves China. When I asked whether he loved Chinese food or not. He laughed and said, 'I like Chinese food very much....but I don't know why Chinese people like to eat dogs. It's horrible.' I explained that we're cutting down the number of people who eat dogs."

Assignment:

Speak with a foreigner this week:

Henry on far left

Henry wrote of the experience:

"And I found though it was basically OK for us to communicate.
But it is hard for me to speak fluently and in sentences. Cos my tongue couldn't catch up with my mind."

Well put, dear Henry!

The Opera Singer

The word OPERA was on the power point presentation screen...

"Do you know what OPERA means?" I asked.

They nodded...they knew.

But, just as a way to explain - I burst into an operatic male voice and sang in a deep bass voice...O, Solo Mia....

Then, I said, "Or in the higher range," and in my best very high falsetto voice, I sang...O, Solo Mia....

The students burst into spontaneous applause...all six classes of them!

I laughed and laughed.

"Maybe I should be an opera singer instead of a teacher," I said.

Oh, but then, I would never have had this wonderful opportunity...
